When seventeen-year-old Bertha is found in a holly patch, dead from a snakebite, her premature death shocks and distresses the entire town of Canterbury. Her father succumbs to a suicidal rage, and the news devastates the leper colony at Harbledown, where Bertha had charitably spent much of her time. On the day that Bertha's body is discovered, Norman soldier Ralph Delchard and lawyer Gervase Bret arrive in Canterbury to settle a land dispute between the archbishop and the head of the abbey. Newly married Ralph hopeto tour the famous cathedral and surrounding countryside with his bride, Golde, a beautiful Saxon. But their honeymoon is cut short, and Delchard's investigation into the property claim is upended when astonishing clues demonstrate that Bertha was in fact murdered. Ultimately, Ralph Delchard and Gervase Bret must look for a force more vicious than a mere snake.

The Serpents of Harbledown Domesday Series Book 5 edition by Edward Marston Literature Fiction eBooks

As usual for this series, the book is a page turner, entertaining, informative about life in 11th century England, and the characters are interesting. This particular book, regardless of who is at fault contained numerous errors, usually the name of a character. One reads that Gervase says something, but the dialogue is out of character for Gervase, but rather something Ralph would say. Other characters are confused also, and it is not always so easy to be sure exactly to whom the author is referring. I persisted in reading through all these errors to finish the book, and, as I say, it's a good story, but a less sloppy presentation would have made it more enjoyable. Without all the typos, I'd have given this book 5 stars.

The Serpents of Harbledown Domesday Series Book 5 edition by Edward Marston Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

When the local priest decides that the snakebite death of a beautiful young girl was murder, Gervase and Ralph tackle the investigation while Golde tries to help the shattered wife of the local reeve. But the killer has plans as well as a dangerous charisma.

This series has been moving more towards horror than mystery, and I don't like horror. There was also no real mystery about who the killer was. I skipped from halfway through to the end, and unless the next book gets back to its mystery roots, I'll quit the series. The title, as always, was quite appropriate.
I have come to love Edward Marston's Domesday series set in the 11th century about the kings commissioners, Ralph Declard and Gervase Bret who along with clergy, Canon Hubert and Brother Simon work to resolve differences, encountered during the compilation of The Domesday Book.

In The Serpents of Harbledown the commission arrives in Canterbury just as a young woman, Bertha, has been found dead from a serpents bite. Brother Martin, who runs the local hospital which serves the lepers, fears that there is more to this than meets the eye and tells Gervase Bret that he fears that Bertha has been murdered. As Gervase becomes entangled in the investigation it interferes with the commission's work of settling a dispute between the priory and abbey.

I enjoy finding out about the life and politics of 11th century England and Marston always does a credible job of his description. Add to that he writes and entertaining and interesting mystery, gives me all the more reason to continue reading this series of books for as long as I can get a hold of them.
So far, all of the Domesday Books are wonderful!
This is the fifth of the series I have read and it doesn't disappoint. The girl is found, dead with an apple in her hand and a serpent nearby. A scene from the Garden of
Eden gown awry. Every twist and turn points to a different killer but the end is always a bit of a surprise. Not at all easy to figure out. Especially in a day with little communication but letters and speech. Our hero's Ralph and Gervase are interestingly of diverse talents. Enjoy the glimpse into a medieval world
